There are ebbs and flows within the fashion industry, and models are not immune to fashion's fickle nature. It seems like only yesterday gap-tooth model Lindsey Wixson was the toast of the town, but now at age 23 she's since announced her retirement as a model to now focus on a career in interior design. But now there's Slick Woods (née Simone Thompson), a catwalk queen and face of Rihanna’s fashion brand Fenty, friends with Adwoa Aboah and photographed by the legendary Tim Walker for i-D. Unlike most models who come from a place of privilege, Slick Woods was sent to jail at the tender age of eighteen, and was raised by her grandmother from the age of four following her mother Leah being imprisoned for manslaughter.
Sitting in my kitchen in rural Queensland and having grown up in Melbourne I can't even comprehend what life most have been like for this incredible young woman, entering into adulthood prematurely and fending for herself through criminal activity. There's a real toughness, grit and authenticity to Slick Woods, whose gap-toothed larger than life smile, shaved head, tattoos and 'I don't give a f***' attitude have earned her the respect of Kanye West, the "the first person that told me I was going to blow up who I actually believed". He's not the angelic fairy godmother that helped Slick out of poverty and crime, with the model stating Kanye was slow to pay her, only fronting the money after she walked for Yeezy a second time. You can look forward to seeing Woods star in next year’s Pirelli calendar, styled by new British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, and many more exciting new projects.
