Now Trending: Customised Denim

Every fashion girl should have at least one denim jacket in her wardrobe. But one thing I’ve never felt comfortable with was looking like everyone else or running the risk of becoming a wallflower. Increasingly more and more designers are offering personalised denim pieces and creating wearable pieces of art, but you yourself can let loose and create your own dream jacket. It’s as simple as buying some fabric paints and for those who want a cohesive look, you might also jazz up a pair of jeans you would have otherwise donated to a local charity shop. It’s double denim with a difference, a statement piece that says so much about style, proudly proclaiming to everyone within the immediate vicinity “only me” rather than “me too”.

Denim jacket customised by Phiney Pet for Topshop

In case I didn’t have you already hooked, I’ve searched high and low for the dreamiest of customised denim jackets and hopefully you’ll be inspired to make this your next weekend project. There’s a lot to be said for the satisfaction of a DIY jacket made with lots of love.

Dirty Disco has been on my radar for a while, since debuting hand-painted denim featuring feminist slogans and technicolour dinosaurs.

Paige Joanna has turned her blog intro a brand, creating ultra-feminine denim jackets inspired by the beauty of flowers and French sensibilities. My favourite is her now sold out, ‘Girl Gang’ jacket.

Me personally, I like to wear either a colourful (and slightly mad!) denim jacket or dress up a vintage jacket with pins and buttons. The former was made by British designer, Kit Neale. What you wear says so much about you, and for me I’m at my happiest when I wear something colourful and bright. I'd love to know how you do customised denim and if there's a special piece in your wardrobe!

DIY ruffle choker

Something I wanted to explore more this year was DIY, under the assumption that I would spend less money on clothes and become comfortable with my very small wardrobe when I moved across the country at the start of the year. While I've tried to stay on top of my expensive fashion habit, there have been relapses and there's been very little time to craft and gussy up pre-loved items of clothing. Rather than spend $18 on a choker necklace from the high street e-retailer Asos (who throughout the year have already received my patronage), I decided to recycle an old dress into the ruffle choker of my dreams.

I almost wish I took a photo of the dress before I started the DIY, but at the same time I'm glad I didn't. No amount of photo editing or cute stickers would have distracted from the threadbare and faded piece of fabric. Fortunately, the neckline and pleating was still in relatively good condition and after inserting some elastic the dress has a new lease on life as an accessory worthy of Marie Antoinette.

The next time you see a garment in desperate need of some tender loving care, look closely and see what you can salvage. It's amazing what you can do with a sewing machine and a little bit of imagination.

Everyone’s out hunting for the best bargain this Black Friday and coming Cyber Monday, whether it be online or instore in preparation for the coming holiday season. But why would you battle through the crowds on the streets and in sore, when you can shop from the ease and comfort of your very own home (pants optional). There are genuine deals out there, but it’s hard to know where to start. First and foremost I’m keeping my eye out on social media and in particular I’ve used Instagram to keep updated on what my favourite brands’ sales are like, but it’s very rare that we see up to 95% off the regular retail price. That’s what one e-retailer, Tidestore are offering for one day only on a great range of women’s clothes and shoes including boots, just in time for Winter. They are even offering free shipping on all orders over $79 (and If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s an amazing sale with an exceedingly high charge to customers on postage).

Some of my favourite pieces from Tidestore include the statement dresses, with patterns and prints similar to Italian fashion designer Alessandro Michele, most well-known for his work at Gucci. With the right sunglasses, and an amazing coat anything is possible.

Phiney Pet Fall 2014

It's been two years since I first discovered (and swas subsequently obsessed with) dreamy British label Phiney Pet created by literal goddess Josephine Pettman, but it was only recently I stumbled across this behind the scenes video from their Fall 2014 collection. Shot by Agnes Kotwinska the video is cinematic evidence of black girl magic and the perfect balance between bright colours and sassiness.

House of Hackney Sample Sale

I can almost feel my hypothetical wallet strain under the pressure of all these sample sales... If patterns and print ate more your thing, House of Hackney are holding their annual Christmas sample sale over two weekends (26-27th of November and 2-4th of December) at Kent & London Furniture on Hackney Road.

Shrimps Sample Sale

Few things could be as maddening as knowing Shrimps, the luxury faux fur brand worm by heroes Alexa Chung, Tavi Gevinson and Susanna Lau are having a sample sale on the other side of the world and by virtue of geography alone, I am in effect, not invited. London babes, do me a favour, go forth this Wednesday and treat yo' self

Camille Rowe

Recent host of the British Vogue full-length documentary on wellness, model and actress Camille Rowe has appeared in campaigns for Chloé, Louis Vuitton, and alongside Robert Pattinson for Dior Homme. She boasts an even more impressive portfolio of magazine covers, appearing on the likes of Vogue Paris, Elle and L'Officiel, just to name a few. Half French, half American Camille Rowe-Pourcheresse is one hundred percent a complete and utter babe. After delving into the archives of the Internet, I almost found myself yearning for a simpler way of dressing incorporating those tried and true staples . There's something so compelling and magical about a girl who can make a vintage t-shirt, denim jacket and pair of boots as stylish as an embellished Prada coat. I know that I myself just don't have that kind of magnetism, but I've found ways around that by dressing in colourful and bright clothes which happen to make me comfortable. It's been a long time since I entertained the notion of dressing in a more conventional way but sometimes it's good to see the other side of the coin.
